Spring '04 Field-Trip
The P.L.A.C.E. Program sponsored a field trip to Las Cruces for the WERC International Environmental Design Contest both to observe student environmental problem-solving at an advanced level and to investigate the roles that WE as artists and art students can play in the contest.
The April field trip layed the ground work for an art exhibition in conjunction with the WERC Environmental Design Contest in April 2005.
THE GOAL: To envision and launch a 2005 pilot art-and-the-environment collaborative exhibition. tentatively titled OUT-OF-SITE: The Seen and Unseen Borders of Environmental Art (see the OUT-OF-SITE proposal).
OUR ROLE AS ARTISTS: All communities impacted by innovations in environmental science and technology need artists to be involved in the creation, interpretation and application of such new science.
Explore with us how art students can redefine the meaning of an arts education!
WERC is a
Consortium for Environmental Education and Technology Development
The 2004 WERC event brought together students from a wide range of disciplines, predominantly the hard sciences, to take part in its 14th Annual International Environmental Design Competition. The student teams design solutions for real-world problems while developing fully operational bench-scale solutions that are presented to judges. The judges represent government, industry, and academia. This experiential learning practice is a proven model for interdisciplinary happenings.

The WERC field trip inspired Heather Houston and Julie Brown's art installation at Harwood Art Center. More information.
