LIVING MURAL PROJECT
A CALL TO ALL

To work with Visiting Community Artists
The Living Mural is a community service project coordinated by the College
of Fine Arts’ PLACE Program. Over the coming months, The Big Brothers
Big Sisters Association of Central New Mexico will sponsor several visits
to the College to contribute their personal visions to the Living Mural.
We are inviting UNM fine arts students—from all disciplines—to
work with Visiting Artists as we collectively inspire community youth to
move, sing, express and create the Living Mural.
The nature of the Living Mural is similar to that of an organism, it can
be layered, and changed; none of us who contribute to the mural will own
it individually. Working with the theme of “place,” the Living
Mural will be a place for Albuquerque community members to contribute to
the art community of UNM. The mural will consist of traces left by each
of the muralists. The initial marks of individualism will morph into a collective
style of marks on the wall of the most traveled hallway in the College of
Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico.
This is a CALL TO ALL. We are looking for students from
all disciplines. Warm up performance activities will be used to loosen up
mural participants while stories and activities with free association will
be used to generate imagery for the mural. So, theatre and dance students
are a must! Visual art students are needed to work as mentors with community
mural participants. And music students are invited to inspire mural painters
with their music. Finally, we encourage cross-over between disciplines,
so everyone is invited to pick up a brush and paint.
