OVERVIEW:
The CFA’s PLACE Program is pleased to announce “Making Waves: Creative Approaches to Community Arts Teaching, Learning & Practice”—a grant initiative to support CFA faculty to develop unique teaching methodologies that guide students through experiential/service learning to create art encounters in community spaces.
Making Waves will fund five faculty grants at $1,250 each to be used toward community art teaching, learning and practice—seeking proposals from all CFA disciplines.
Making Waves is aimed at adapting existing CFA courses to be offered during the 07/08 academic year (including summer and intercession courses) towards experiential learning through community engagement. We are looking for proposals that will explore new methods of teaching core curriculum that integrates any one of three tracks:
Making Waves is intended to stir the waters of CFA teaching dialogue and practice; student learning and doing; CFA community engagement and service. The goal of this grant funding is to encourage inventive and explorative teaching practices that integrate theory, experiential learning, and community engagement with the result of contributing new ways of defining the university’s research and service mission. The Making Waves grants are for CFA faculty and adjuncts alike.

BACKGROUND & PURPOSEFUL CONNECTIONS:
Nationwide institutions of higher education have been increasingly integrating service-learning pedagogy into both the general and core curriculum. UNM has recently begun to explore how service-learning teaching with an experiential component can deepen a student’s learning experience while extending the university’s ability to both provide valued research and respond to community need. The PLACE Program is the College of Fine Arts response to the university’s call to service.
The PLACE Program is a natural incubator to support research in “community arts practice” as a coalescing professional field; foster a professional service-teaching environment; engender new career pathways for CFA graduates. The Making Waves teaching grants are aimed at building a win-win-win model between teaching as creative research, service-learning as a career path finder, and much needed community service. MAKING WAVES – GRANT GUIDELINES
TEACHING GRANT EXPECTATIONS:
Grantees will be expected to:
I. Modify an existing course to adapt a framework for service-learning instruction, community arts method of practice, or develop a learning vehicle for arts entrepreneurship;
II. Modify the syllabus to integrate service-learning, experiential service, community arts practice, arts enterprise component into the structure of the course.
III. Gather information for documentation. This will include the number of students enrolled in the course; description of teaching methodology/approach; description of student and community engagment activity; the name, number and type of agencies served; an anecdotal capture of community impact (e.g. comments, journals, video clips, interviews, website visits, etc);
VI. Attend a four hour orientation on course development and community engagement strategies.
V. Present an overview of your course to other faculty at the ’08 CFA Creative Colloquium--tentatively scheduled for Aprill 2008.
VI. Share your work with colleagues throughout the year.
VII. Complete the final report (e.g. summary narrative of community project, teaching experience and selection of student reflection (by permission) and digital record of highlights from community arts event.
Five grants of $1,250 will be awarded. Funds can be used for courses starting as early as the upcoming ’07 Intersession, ’07 Summer Sessions, but must be completed by June 15th, 2008.
Funds can be used for any of the following areas. Distribution of funds to each of these areas is up to the grant recipient and must be outlined in the budget section of their proposal.
*Supplies & Services. Any or all of the funds may be transferred to a departmental account for supplies and services necessary for the implementation of the service-learning course with a record of expenses attached to the final report.
*Partnership Building. Up to 50% of funds can be used to sponsor participation from an underserved community group in order to implement service learning activities with the community partner (e.g. bus transportation for community site activity, snacks for after-school activity with youth group, tickets for shared attendance to a performance, joint sharing of a visiting artist, etc.).
GRANT SELECTION:
Proposals will be reviewed by two CFA faculty (TBA), two community members from arts organizations (TBA) and Ramsey Lofton, CFA Community Education Supervisor. Proposals will be scored accordingly:
I. Quality: To what degree is community integrated into the course as “engaged participants” and/or providing “reciprocal exchange”, not as subjects of study or audience passively witnessing (60 points)
II. Innovation and Replicability: The design of curriculum advances the knowledge of how community arts practice can be integrated into teaching and offers one or more replicable components. (20 points)
III. Sustainability: Intention to continue the course with community arts practice integrated into the curriculum. (20 points)
Preference will be given to those applicants who have not received a previous PLACE faculty teaching grant for course development. But returning applicants are encouraged to apply.
